One of the best things to come out of my friend and fellow blogger Dean Godbold‘s musical tour of Australia is his suggestion to check out Aussie singer-songwriter Vance Joy.
Dean has always been a good source of new music and now that he is spending his time going from festival to festival down under, he has been suggesting bands and musicians like there’s no tomorrow, bus one name has stood out from the rest and that is James Keogh, the 25-year-old Melbourne based musician who goes by the stage name Vance Joy, as it only took one first listen to tell that I was going to be was hooked on his unique and infectious mash-up of alt-pop and indie-folk sounds and lyrics which are bursting with sunshine and an almost free-spirited nature.
His music was a revelation, filled with humble and understated lyricism, drawing you in and making the listener want to lay back and enjoy the gentle and almost peaceful ebb and flow that flows from each cord, something that is quite astonishing when you consider that up until 4 years ago he was playing Australian Rules Football and music was the last thing on his mind, but non the less has led to me to discover three songs that have fast been added to my sound of the summer for 2014, the beautiful ballad ‘Emmylou’, the interesting a multi-layered ‘From Afar‘ and the song that burst Joy into the spotlight ‘Riptide‘, all of which contain interesting and intricate elements that as a whole help form an eccentric and self-reflective look at Joy’s loves, losses and life in general, producing a sound that for me has brightened up a pretty lacklustre summer of music and takes me away to a beach halfway across the world, somewhere that your cares and worries don’t matter as much, this is why I was glad to see that he will be hitting our shores throughout September and October.
