Director: James Wan

Staring: Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe, Patrick Wilson

One year on from the events of Justice League, Arthur Curry/Aquaman (Momoa) has gone back to his carefree life of avoiding responsibility, that is until Princess Mera (Heard) convinces him to return to Atlantis with the hope of preventing a potential war between the sea and the land by defeating his half-brother (Wilson) and claiming his birthright as King of Atlantis.

It’s pretty safe to say that even with the bigger name heroes and a history of producing good superhero films, in recent years the DC extended universe hasn’t been as big a hit with critics and audiences as it’s Marvel counterparts, some saying that the DC universe was to dark, some saying that the stories felt to rushed and some saying that the films just weren’t that fun, that was until Wonder Woman (2017) came out and felt like a breath of fresh air, not only because it proves that you can make a female lead superhero a success, but also because it showed the direction that DC should be going in.

Aquaman feels like it belongs much more in the same universe as Wonder Woman than the other films in the DCU and that’s a good thing, I don’t belive an action film about a superhero that can talk to fish would work if it took itself to seriously, it should be fun, vibrant, cheesy and action-packed, all of which Aquaman does and does well.

Back when Monoa was first announced as Aquaman a lot of people were sceptical about how it would work, but now it seems like an excellent piece of casting, he already looks like a superhero but also his charisma and commitment to part have more than won me over, while Heard is a badass in this movie, though I would have liked her character to have been a little more fleshed out, likewise with the big bad King Orm (Wilson) who can come across as little one-dimensional from time to time, were as the secondary baddie Mantis had more back story and felt as though he should have been the main antagonist is the film, with Orm saved for the sequel.

Aquaman may have a few pacing issues and might of glossed over the secondary characters, but these are minor complaints in an otherwise fun-filled action romp, just what the DCU needed but also just you need if you’re trying to escape those post-holidays blues

If you liked: Wonder Woman, Thor: Ragnarok, Wrath of the Titans
