Ian McShane and David Harbour in Hellboy (2019)

As someone who actually enjoyed the 2004 Hellboy film with Ron Perlman in the title role and the 2008 sequel Hellboy II: The Golden Army, I was a surprised when they found it so difficult the finance the third film in the series, it was however hardly a bombshell when it was announced that there would be a reboot of the property and only mild amazement that they had chosen to go for an R rating, most likely down to the success of Deadpool and Wolverine.

My first thoughts after watching the latest trailer is just how different the feel is going to be to the previous couple of movies, not only does the violence look to have been turned up to the max, in fact there is probably more blood in the trailer than both of the other films combined, but also the strong language is going to be more in fitting with a film about a demon fighting evil and less like a Marvel superhero knock-off.

Another thing I noticed is how great the visuals look like they will be, the makers have clearly gone taken inspiration from the comics and graphic novels and produced a look that wouldn’t look out-of-place on the cover of an 80’s metal album, in fact its bold of them to not be scared of showing the crazy side of the film and some of the shots, such as Hellboy with full horn and crown riding a dragon, but my guess is that the makers know that you’ve seen most things before in the other films so might as well go big and create a buzz.

Overall I’m really excited about the new direction that the film is taking and although I enjoyed the first two films, a lot has happened in the years since that has made stronger rated films more commercially viable and there for we look like we will be getting a film that’s truer to the comics and ideally will result in an even better film.

So what do you all think of the trailer, are you as excited as I am about the film?
