A whole new speed of hero
Director: Jeff Fowler
Starring: Jim Carrey, James Marsden, Neal McDonough, Ben Schwartz
Release Date: November 8th 2019
A small town police officer (Marsden) must help Sonic (Schwartz) escape the clutches of the US government and the evil Dr Ivo Robotnik (Carrey).
Hot off the heals of Pikachu Detective, the makers of Sonic have chosen to take a videogame character popular in the ’90s and placed them in the modern world, but unlike with Pikachu I’m a little apprehensive about this film, after all, it’s hard to see how a sonic game can easily be altered to make a decent film for the big screen.
The casting is strong, I love seeing Jim Carrey being let loose in a quirky role and James Marsden is a truly underrated actor but after seeing the trailer I can’t help but feel the film is destined to fall into the same category as films that took video game characters, invented a random and overcomplicated plot and ended up widely missing the mark such as Pixels or Angry Birds, not only this but the character design of Sonic doesn’t seem to fit with what you would expect and I imagine that will throw a few people as it has me.
When will I go to see it? I’ll look out for more trailers closer to the time but at the moment I probably won’t bother.
