Every year you hear about an upcoming horror film that’s being hailed the “scariest ghost story ever” or “scarest of all time”, this year the honour falls to The Night House following its premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.

After directing The Ritual, I’ve been looking forward to seeing what Bruckner directed next and if the buzz is correct then he might just be following one excellent psychological horror film with another, with word of mouth saying it feels like a cross between the great horror classics of the ’70s and Ari Aster’s breakthrough hit Hereditary.

Starring Rebecca hall in whats said to be an impressive performance as Beth, a woman who following the death of her husband, must not only deal with his loss but the secrets.

From the sounds of things, Bruckner is about to join a select group of young directors with Aster, Jordan Peele and Mike Flanagan, who aren’t afraid to move away from producing safe and cliche-filled horror movies and instead inject some unpredictability and danger to the genre once again.

I for one am glad that Searchlight Pictures have chosen The Night House the first film to land a major deal at this year’s festival for $12m.
