Film | The Judge – Review

The Judge (2014)

Plot – Big-city lawyer Hank Palmer returns to his childhood home where his father, the town’s judge, is suspected of murder. Hank sets out to discover the truth and, along the way, reconnects with his estranged family.

Director – David Dobkin

Starring – Robert Downey Jr, Robert Duvall, Vera Farmiga, Billy Bob Thornton, Vincent D’Onofrio

Genre – Crime | Drama

Released – October 2014

Closer in tone to melodrama than the straight-up courtroom thriller that some of the marketing wanted you to believe, The Judge is a surprising yet sentimental picture that succeeds mostly due to the incredible performances of Robert Duvall as Joseph Palmer and Robert Downey Jr. as his son Hank Palmer, backed-up by a collection of strong supporting turns by the likes of Farmiga, Thornton and D’Onofrio. The only downside comes from the overly long runtime and the introduction of a needless subplot concerning Downey’s character and his ex-girlfriend that distracts from the true heart of the story. ★★★★
