It’s always fun watching Matthew McConaughey play a man-child alongside Kate Hudson playing the lady who wishes he would grow up. That said, I’m not going to pretend that my expectations for Fool’s Gold were that high. Luckily, I’d say that they met these low expectations. I expected beautiful people experiencing wild adventures in exotic locations which the movie delivered in spades, along with great chemistry between two actors who have worked together previously, though that doesn’t stop the plot from being fairly predictable for large portions of the movie.

While the film is filled with enjoyable action sequences and fun in parts, every time you’re getting swept up in the action, it gets broken up by a whole heap of talking that really doesn’t advance the plot as much as the writers and director would have hoped, instead, all it did was slow the pace and add pointless sub-plots only introduced to increase the runtime. That said, it’s not really a surprise that movies such as Fool’s Gold continue to get made, you put pretty people in beautiful locations, sprinkle in some family-friendly humour and pinch of risk, you get yourself a relatively inexpensive middle of the road action-adventure that 9 times out of 10 makes a decent profit.

Standard action-adventure fare with a predictable outcome. Overall, Fool’s Gold is just National Treasure without the globetrotting and slightly less cryptic clues. Just don’t go into the movie expecting the next Indiana Jones, and you should be pleasantly surprised.

Rating: 3 out of 5.
