Hounds of Love (2016)

Kicking off with an interesting use of slow-motion to show Evelyn and John White hunting for their next victim, Hounds of Love lets you know immediately that you’re in for an unsettling experience. And for a film that’s primarily a drama rather than horror, boasts more than one terrifying sequence that will stick in your memory long after the movie finishes.

Ben Young does excellent as this is his first feature film, disguising Hounds of Love’s low budget through skilful direction and creative editing choices. The movie also benefits from absolutely brilliantly acting across the board, especially from the two female leads.

Cummings as Vicki really goes through hell over the course of the movie. encompassing the terror felt by her character perfectly, while Booth puts in the kinda performance that if this was a Hollywood production, an Oscar nomination would have been a possibility. Rounding off the main cast, Stephen Curry also does a great job at playing the sociopathic John White, it was quite a surprise to find out later that he is primarily a comedic actor.

This isn’t a movie I would recommend to the faint of heart purely because of how brutal it becomes, however, those of you who aren’t offended by such things will, like me, find Hounds of Love a truly powerful piece of cinema.
