Wristcutters tackles a subject not normally seen on the big screen and most definitely not in a comedy, but this isn’t your normal film, which starts off with Zia (Fugit) committing suicide after his girlfriend breaks up with him, only to find out that he doesn’t die but instead is transported to a place slightly worse than the world he lived in before, populated by others who have also committed suicide. It’s a bizarre and interesting tale of love, friendship, and a new look at the afterlife, based on the short story Kneller’s Happy Campers by Etgar Keret.
Given the subject matter, it’s easy to see why this movie may actually be too dark or weird for some audiences and some would avoid watching the film or write it off completely, but I’m glad that I gave the film an opportunity and what I was treated to is an original and creative film which sadly so few will ever see. It’s been a long time since I’ve had the pleasure of watching a romantic comedy as unique as this, one that most assuredly doesn’t follow the typical formula and keeps your brain engaged for the entire movie.
The acting in this film is very solid, with each character connecting in a very fluid manner, with the underrated Patrick Fugit really doing a great job as the lead. it’s a surprise after shining in both Almost Famous” and Saved! that his career hasn’t taken off further, but oddly enough this isn’t the case, either way, I think he did a great job with the material given to him.
Shannyn Sossamon also did a great job with what she is given, it’s quite a surprise we never got that breakout performance from her, while Shea Whigham is extremely amusing as Eugene. In conclusion for his first feature film, director and writer Goran Dukic did a great job and if you’re a fan of dark comedies or romantic films that don’t follow the tried and tested path then I highly recommend this film
