Late Night with the Devil maintains a chilling approach, blending nostalgia and psychological horror in a manner that surprises and entertains the viewers. We all know the classic format of a talk show but this movie creatively takes the format and turns it into a nightmare. Resorting to Cameron and Colin Cairnes’ directing skills, the film is perfect in its twisted, thrilling invasion that is truly original in every sense of the word. Their distortion of the script is simply splendid to watch.

The plot revolves around a character named Jack Delroy (David Dastmalchian), who is trying to save his career as a talk show host by broadcasting a show. His deepest desire is seen when he is surrounded by anguish, as the time frame is 1977. A twist to the plot wades in as this episode takes off with Delroy dabbling in the occult which ends up turning into supernatural events when another actor enters the limelight. Things go Haywire in the show as an innocent menace rolls in and things take a radically different approach.

Adding sheer brilliance to the character, Dastmalchian explores Delroy through an agonizing portrayal of the character as the film progresses into chaos. As dire and threatening as his life may seem, audiences feel a sense of connection to the character purely from Dastmalchian’s performance. Adding to the storyline, the supporting cast and a chilling young medium along with the mysterious occultist, enhance the show and breathe depth into the plot.

The Cairnes brothers masterfully recreate the look and feel of a 1970s talk show, down to the set design, costumes, and vintage broadcast aesthetic. This meticulous attention to detail immerses viewers in the era and heightens the tension as the controlled environment of live television becomes a powder keg of supernatural horror. The single-night setting creates a tight, focused narrative that unfolds in real-time, drawing the audience deeper into the chaos.

What sets Late Night with the Devil apart is its balancing act between psychological tension and outright terror. The slow build of suspense, interspersed with moments of dark humour, gives way to chilling, visceral horror in the film’s third act. The blend of social commentary on media sensationalism and classic horror tropes creates a unique experience that lingers long after the credits roll.

If the film has a flaw, its ambition occasionally outpaces its execution. Some of the supernatural elements feel underexplored, leaving tantalizing questions unanswered. Additionally, while mostly effective, the tonal shifts between satire and horror may feel jarring for some viewers.

Despite these minor shortcomings, Late Night with the Devil is a bold and original entry into the horror genre. Its innovative premise, combined with a standout performance from Dastmalchian and the directors’ deft handling of tension, makes it a compelling watch.

For fans of retro horror and psychological thrillers, Late Night with the Devil offers a unique experience—a chilling reminder of the power of live television and the lurking dread behind the cameras. It’s a haunting show you won’t soon forget.
